| Honoring EAA's Young Eagles volunteers | |
| July 29, 2009 | by Barbara A. Schmitz, EAA AirVenture Today |
No matter the reason they got involved in EAA's Young Eagles program, they have stayed involved because they know they are making a difference. While thousands give of their time to make the Young Eagles program soar, a few have been honored for their extraordinary efforts. This year's winners will receive their awards today at the EAA AirVenture Museum's Eagle Hangar.
Russell Grell, Ground Volunteer
Someone took Russell Grell up for an airplane ride when he was young, giving him that "spark" to pursue aviation. Now he's helping do the same for countless other youth.
Grell has been ground coordinator at Rocky Mountain Chapter 301 Young Eagles events since 1999, and he said his job centers around doing a little bit of everything, from directing traffic, to parking aircraft, to escorting people to the aircraft and more. "I'm an A&P mechanic besides a pilot, so I'll also make visual inspections of airplanes to make sure everything looks hunky-dory."
Of receiving the award, Grell said, "So many people are just as worthy as I am, if not more. But I'm very happy to represent them all."
| Highlands Ranch Civil Air Patrol Cadet completes flight training | |
| June 2009 | by 1st Lt Terese Barta, CAP |
Oshkosh, WI. Joshua Dorow, son of Chris and Amy Dorow of Highlands Ranch, CO, completed 10 hours of flight training in a Cessna 172 aircraft during this year's National Flight Academy (NFA) held by the Civil Air Patrol. The NFA was held June 12-21 at Wittman Regional Airport, Oshkosh, WI. During the Academy, he achieved a pre-solo flight, which involves taking off and landing the plane without assistance from his on-board flight instructor. Dorow, a Cadet Technical Sergeant in the Mustang Cadet Squadron (Englewood CO), has been a member of CAP for seven years. His flight instructor at NFA was CAP Senior Member Beth Hovland (Fox Cites Squadron, Wisconsin Wing). The Civil Air Patrol is the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force. CAP's three primary missions include Emergency Services (search and rescue and disaster relief), Aerospace Education, and Cadet Programs. Over 22,000 young Americans ages 12-20 participate in the CAP Cadet Program, which trains young men and women in teamwork, moral leadership, aerospace education, and technical skills to support emergency services. The National Flight Academy is one of many special activities offered across the country that CAP cadets are eligible to participate in during the summer.
